    Normal vision [EMMETROPIA]

    Short-sightedness [MYOPIA]

    Long-sightedness [HYPERMETROPIA]

    Astigmatism

    PRESBYOPIA

Emmetropia is a condition of the normal eye. It is achieved when the refractive power of the cornea and the axial length of the eye balance out, which focuses rays exactly on the retina, resulting in perfect vision. Common vision disorders such as short-sightedness, long-sightedness or astigmatism, are the result of the light focusing just in front of the retina, or behind it, which is usually caused by the shape of the eye being too short or too long.
It is a common eye condition that causes the patient to see distant objects as blurred, despite clearly seeing their close surroundings. It occurs when a patient’s eye is either too long or the cornea is too curved, or a combination of the two. The light is focused in front of the retina, instead of directly onto it, sending a blurred image to the brain, when myopia patients look at distant objects. Laser treatment is available for patients aged 18 and over.
Long-sightedness results from the length of the eye being too short, or the refraction power of the eye not being strong enough, causing the rays of light that enter the eye to fall behind the retina rather than directly onto it. Hypermetropia can result in blurred vision, primarily at near distance, but it can also affect distance vision. Laser treatment is available for patients aged 35 and over.
Astigmatism is caused by an irregular shape of the eye. Unlike in a healthy eye, where the cornea has a regular, spherical shape, the cornea of a person affected by astigmatism does not have the same curvature in every direction. This affects the way the light rays are focused, resulting in blurred or distorted vision. Treatment is available for patients aged 18 and over.
Presbyopia is another name for long-sightedness, which is caused by aging and results in a need to wear reading correction glasses as we head into our mid-40’s. It is caused by a natural deterioration of accommodation, the ability of the muscles in your eye to focus over a range of distances, making focusing on close objects difficult. Laser treatment of Presbyopia is not recommended.
